Where did all the people go?  Some people say one thing and others say something else.  So where is a person when he is put in the ground?  God is Who made the people and gave them the breath of life so what does He say where people are when they take their last breath and the dear ones are standing around the grave weeping.

From the creation of this planet each person that has lived his full life has come eventually to the end of his time on the earth.   So where are they?  In Genesis it says-

 Genesis 2:7

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

 Genesis 3:19

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Ecclesiastes 9:5

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Job knew that when he died he would be in the grave until the resurrection when he would be alive again by the power of God to see his Redeemer in the clouds of glory.

Job 19:26

And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

The man Lazarus was dead and in the tomb for four days.  Jesus called him on the fourth day to come forth.  He was beaming with youthful features and health.  He had no report of reaching heaven or of going any other place than the cave he was buried in, when Jesus called him to come out.  By the fourth day he was already expected to have started to decay but he was energetic, young and filled with vigor.  This miracle was to show the power of God.  And eventually he would at the end of his life he would rest again in the grave awaiting the coming of Jesus in the clouds of glory and the resurrection of the just.

 John 11:41

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

John 11:43

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

Though most people have gone to rest in the grave until Jesus comes, there are two people who the Bible tells us did not die.  But because they lived such lives full of right doing which is righteousness, they were taken to heaven before they succumbed to the grave.  They were sinners just like all of us but they were diligent in the service of the Lord and obeyed God.  Sin was abhorrent to them and they confessed all sin and taught others to serve the Lord.

One of these men was Enoch.  He spent much time in communion with God.  And was a wonderful example to those about him.

Genesis 5:24

And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Elijah was a prophet in Israel and was always teaching the people and in the power of God raised a boy to life from the death he had been brought under.

2 Kings 2:11

And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Moses lived a wonderful patient, kind and meek life.  He was a very educated man but he was very humble and led the Israelites to the promised land under the power of God.  When it came time for him to die he was not left in the grave very long and he was resurrected and taken to heaven.

Jude 1:9

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

Deuteronomy 34:5

So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

Deuteronomy 34:6

And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

It was Moses and Elijah that came to the Mount of Transfiguration to commune with Jesus on earth.

Luke 9:28

And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

Luke 9:29

And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

Luke 9:30

And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

Luke 9:31

Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

Luke 9:32

But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

Luke 9:33

And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

When Jesus died there arose some people from their graves that had live for God.  They were people that had lived through all the ages of history that had been martyred for their faith in God.  They went about telling people of the greatness of the Lord.

Matthew 27:50

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Matthew 27:51

     And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Matthew 27:52

And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

Matthew 27:53

And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

When Jesus, as he hung upon the cross, cried out, It is finished, the rocks rent, the earth shook, and some of the graves where shaken open; for when Jesus arose from the dead, and conquered death and the grave; when he walked forth from his prison house a triumphant conqueror; while the earth was reeling and shaking, and the excellent glory of heaven clustered around the sacred spot, obedient to his call, many of the righteous dead came forth as witnesses that he had risen. Those favored, resurrected saints came forth glorified. They were a few chosen and holy ones who had lived in every age from creation, even down to the days of Christ.  And while the chief priests and Pharisees were seeking to cover up the resurrection of Christ, God chose to bring up a company from their graves to testify that Jesus had risen, and to declare his glory.
