Appear
Forgive
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
It is a wonderful privilege to have forgiveness. If we want God to forgive us we are to be forgiving to our brothers and sisters and not harbor anything against others even if they do horrible things against us and our family. Just as Jesus said when He was on the cross.
Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Micah 7:19
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Matthew 6:15
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 6:14
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Matthew 18:35
So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Jeremiah 31:34
….saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Appear
How is it that we appear to those about us? Can someone see there is something different? Or do we look like everyone around, dressing in the worldly fashions that are immodest and unhealthy and looking like someone who we are not? Do we look like a Christian? Can people see that we are following Jesus just by looking at us? Jesus has given instructions to His children how to clothe the body. And how to prepare for eternal life.
Zephaniah 1:8
And it shall come to pass
in the day of the LORD’S
sacrifice, that I will punish
the princes, and the king’s
children, and all such as are
clothed with strange apparel.
1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that
women adorn themselves in
modest apparel, with
shamefacedness and sobriety;
not with broided hair,
or gold, or pearls,
or costly array;
Jeremiah 4:30
And when thou art spoiled,
what wilt thou do? Though
thou clothest thyself with
crimson, though thou deckest
thee with ornaments of gold,
though thou rentest thy
face with painting, in vain
shalt thou make thyself fair;
thy lovers will despise thee,
they will seek thy life.
2 Kings 9:30
And when Jehu was come
to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of
it; and she painted her face,
and tired her head, and
looked out at a window.
1 Peter 3:3
Whose adorning let it not be
that outward adorning of plaiting
the hair, and of wearing of gold,
or of putting on of apparel;
1 Peter 3:4
But let it be the hidden
man of the heart, in that
which is not corruptible,
even the ornament of a meek
and quiet spirit, which is in the
sight of God of great price.
Fashion
The Buds and Blossoms of Pride.-
“There are idols cherished in our families and in our churches today which have the same influence upon us as did the golden calf upon the Israelites. Will the people search themselves? Will the shepherds do their work as faithful sentinels of God? Will they see what idols they are cherishing? Will every one that is in moderate circumstances consider that they are to be a people distinct and separate in their fashions of dress, their speech, their deportment, from the world? Will they see their idolatry in small as well as in large matters, and that it is separating them from God? When reproofs come they are ashamed, but not repentant. They have had great light, great opportunities, line upon line, and precept upon precept, but pride buds and blossoms in their apparel, revealing the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

“They will feel an anxious desire to be separate from the world, like their Master. They will not imitate its pride, fashions, or customs. The noble object will be ever before them, to glorify God and gain the immortal inheritance. This prospect will swallow up all beside of an earthly nature. God will have a people separate and distinct from the world. And as soon as any have a desire to imitate the fashions of the world, that they do not immediately subdue, just so soon God ceases to acknowledge them as His children. They are the children of the world and of darkness. They lust for the leeks and onions of Egypt, that is, desire to be as much like the world as possible; by so doing, those that profess to have put on Christ virtually put Him off, and show that they are strangers to grace and strangers to the meek and lowly Jesus. If they had acquainted themselves with Him, they would walk worthy of Him.”

“Do not, my sisters, trifle longer with your own souls and with God. I have been shown that the main cause of your backsliding is your love of dress. This leads to the neglect of grave responsibilities, and you find yourselves with scarcely a spark of the love of God in your hearts. Without delay, renounce the cause of your backsliding, because it is sin against your own soul and against God. Be not hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Fashion is deteriorating the intellect and eating out the spirituality of our people. Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God. I have been shown that our church rules are very deficient. All exhibitions of pride in dress, which is forbidden in the word of God, should be sufficient reason for church discipline. If there is a continuance, in face of warnings and appeals and entreaties, to still follow the perverse will, it may be regarded as proof that the heart is in no way assimilated to Christ. Self, and only self, is the object of adoration, and one such professed Christian will lead many away from God.”
“There is a terrible sin upon us as a people, that we have permitted our church members to dress in a manner inconsistent with their faith. We must arise at once and close the door against the allurements of fashion. Unless we do this, our churches will become demoralized.”

1 Timothy 2:9, 10. “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh godliness) with good works.”
1 Peter 3:3-5: “Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.”

“As we see our sisters departing from simplicity in dress and cultivating a love for the fashions of the world, we feel troubled. By taking steps in this direction they are separating themselves from God and neglecting the inward adorning. They should not feel at liberty to spend their God-given time in the unnecessary ornamentation of their clothing. How much better might it be employed in searching the Scriptures, thus obtaining a thorough knowledge of the prophecies and of the practical lessons of Christ.

“Another great cause of mortality among infants and youth, is the custom of leaving their arms and shoulders naked. This fashion cannot be too severely censured. It has cost the life of thousands. The air, bathing the arms and limbs, and circulating about the armpits, chills these sensitive portions of the body, so near the vitals, and hinders the healthy circulation of the blood, and induces disease, especially of the lungs and brain. Those who regard the health of their children of more value than the foolish flattery of visitors, or the admiration of strangers, will ever clothe the shoulders and arms of their tender infants. The mother’s attention has been frequently called to the purple arms and hands of her child, and she has been cautioned in regard to this health and the life-destroying practice; and the answer has often been, “I always dress my children in this manner. They get used to it. I cannot endure to see the arms of infants covered. It looks old-fashioned.” These mothers dress their delicate infants as they would not venture to dress themselves.
They know that if their own arms were exposed without a covering, they would shiver with chilliness. Can infants of a tender age endure this process of hardening without receiving injury? Some children may have at birth so strong constitutions that they can endure such abuse without its costing them life; yet thousands are sacrificed, and tens of thousands have the foundation laid for a short, invalid life, by the custom of bandaging and surfeiting the body with much clothing, while the arms–which are at such distance from the seat of life, and for that cause need even more clothing than the chest and lungs–are left naked. Can mothers expect to have quiet and healthy infants, who thus treat them?
When the limbs and arms are chilled, the blood is driven from these parts to the lungs and head. The circulation is impeded, and nature’s fine machinery does not move harmoniously. The system of the infant is deranged, and it cries and mourns because of the abuse it is compelled to suffer. The mother feeds it, thinking it must be hungry, when food only increases its suffering. Tight bands and an overloaded stomach do not agree. It has no room to breathe. It may scream, struggle and pant for breath, and yet the mother not mistrust the cause.”
